UN Affiliate Visits Gadani Shipbreaking Yard

A team from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a United Nations affiliate, arrived in Gadani on September 17, 2024, at the invitation of the Pakistan Ship Breakers Association. Led by Project Manager Mr. John Alanso, the team included experts like Susan Wing, Geir Tolston, Captain Athar Shafiq, and Rabia Razzaq from the International Labour Organization.

During their visit, the IMO team conducted a multimedia briefing and training session on hazardous waste management, fire fighting, and health and safety protocols for shipbreaking workers ¹. They also inspected the yard’s compliance with international standards and observed labor practices, including working hours and ship dismantling procedures.

The team’s visit aims to enhance safety and environmental standards in Pakistan’s shipbreaking industry. This move follows previous concerns over worker safety and environmental impact at Gadani Shipbreaking Yard.
