Two-Day International Conference Addresses Climate-Induced Natural Disasters in KIU Gilgit-Baltistan

KIU An insightful two-day international conference focusing on the critical issue of natural disasters induced by climate change commenced in Karakoram International University Gilgit, with collaborative efforts from Karakoram International University, UNDP GLOF-II and various other esteemed institutions. The conference featured an impressive lineup of national and international experts, including representatives from China, Switzerland, and Norway, who convened to discuss and deliberate on the pressing challenges posed by climate-related disasters.

At the inaugural ceremony of the conference, Speaker of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, Nazir Ahmad Advocate, underlined the region’s susceptibility to climate-induced threats and emphasized that without swift and decisive action, these challenges could lead to further devastation and upheaval in the area.
Advocate Nazir Ahmad stated, “The effects of climate change have already begun to take a toll on Gilgit-Baltistan, and if we do not act now, the future may bring even greater adversity to our beloved region. It is crucial that the international community and aid organizations join hands with the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan to tackle the formidable challenge of climate change collaboratively. By uniting our efforts, we can address this critical global issue head-on and pave the way for a more resilient future.”
The conference opened with a diverse range of speakers sharing their insights and knowledge on the implications of climate change and natural disasters in the context of Gilgit-Baltistan. Among the notable speakers were:
Professor Dr. Attaullah Shah, Vice Chancellor of Karakoram International University, Mr. Abdul Basit, Provincial Coordinator of the UNDP GLOF-II Project GB, Ms. Nusrat Nasab, Chief Executive of Agha Agency for Habitat and others.
These experts shed light on the specific dangers and challenges that Gilgit-Baltistan faces due to the changing climate patterns and discussed strategies for mitigating the impacts and building resilience within the region.
