The Participation of People with Disabilities: Forming a Better Society

By: Nabila Malik

December 3 is observed as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities worldwide. The United Nations adopted a resolution in October 1992, declaring this day to be observed. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the rights and responsibilities of people with disabilities and to take practical steps to improve their performance.

The theme for 2024 is “Promoting the leadership of persons with disabilities towards an inclusive, accessible, and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.” The aim of this theme is to highlight the capabilities of people with disabilities, integrate them into the national mainstream, and encourage them to utilize their leadership skills.

Pakistan has numerous examples of people with disabilities who have overcome obstacles through determination, courage, and strong willpower. Muniba Mazari, the first female wheelchair-bound Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations, is an inspiration to many. Saima Saleem Saif became Pakistan’s first visually impaired diplomat after passing the CSS exam. Dr. Khalid Jamil, a renowned doctor and news caster, introduced the term “persons with disabilities” at an international conference.

These individuals have proven that disability is not a limitation, but rather a source of strength. Pakistani people are known for their resilience and ability to find new paths and horizons. People with disabilities possess a unique perspective and abilities that others may not have. All they need is a discerning eye to recognize and nurture their hidden talents.
