Dr. Ghullam Haider Buriro (aka Dr Haider Sindhi), an acclaimed linguist and author, passed away on 18 August 2023 at the age of 83. Dr. Haider Sindhi was born in 1940 in the village Mubarak Khan Buriro, Discrict Naushahro Feroze in Sindh province.
After receiving his early education from H.M. Khawaja High School in Nawabshah, Dr. Haider Sindhi went on to become a professor at Quaid-e-Azam University in Islamabad in 1970. Over the course of his prolific career, he authored approximately 35 books, including the influential “Sindhi Boli ja Sarchashma” and the Government of Pakistan certified “Hayat e Qalander Shahbaz.”
Dr. Haider Sindhi earned the distinction of being the first PhD holder from Nawabshah district. His doctorate was in Linguistics from the University of Sindh. In addition to teaching, he served as Director of the National Institute of Pakistan Studies (NIPS) department at Quaid-e-Azam University and also worked at Radio Pakistan.
His seminal research on the Sindhi language and advocacy for mother tongue education left an indelible impact on the field of linguistics. According to distinguished colleague Dr. Ahmed, ” Dr. Haider Sindhi was instrumental in advancing our understanding of Sindhi language and dialects. His scholarly works will continue to be invaluable references for generations.”
Dr. Haider Sindhi’s illustrious career earned him widespread acclaim and recognition. His tireless efforts to promote Sindhi language education will not be forgotten. The linguistics community has lost a pioneer, but Dr. Haider Sindhi’s legacy shall endure through his transformative scholarship and writings.
