Gilgit-Baltistan, August 29, 2024 – A press note issued by the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority has revealed that an unusual increase in temperature has been recorded across the region from early July to late August. The sudden weather change has led to multiple incidents of flooding and landslides in various districts, causing severe damage to public and private property, loss of life and property, and disruption to transportation and livelihoods.
The rising temperature has caused an increase in water flow and levels in streams and rivers, severely affecting settlements and infrastructure in low-lying areas. The government, however, took proactive measures to mitigate the effects of the disaster.
Keeping in view the predictions of the Meteorological Department, the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan cancelled the leaves of all employees of relevant departments from early July. Instructions were also issued to ensure the timely availability of machinery and manpower to deal with any untoward incidents. As a result, numerous incidents of landslides, floods, and other disasters were effectively managed.
The Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority is working tirelessly to restore normalcy in the affected areas. Relief efforts are underway, and the government is working to provide compensation to those affected by the disaster.
