PUNJAB GOVERNMENT INITIATES FREE LEGAL AID FOR INDIGENT PRISONERS

Independent Report
Lahore, August 5: Following the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the Punjab Home Department has established free legal aid committees in all 43 prisons across the province.

The committees, formed in collaboration with the Punjab Bar Council and district bar associations, will provide free legal assistance to indigent prisoners who cannot afford a lawyer.

Eligible prisoners will submit their requests to their respective jail superintendents, who will arrange for them to be assigned a lawyer. A total of 447 lawyers have been included in the free legal aid committees across Punjab.

The breakdown of lawyers included in the committees is as follows: Lahore Division (45), Gujranwala Division (90), Rawalpindi (70), Faisalabad Division (47), Multan (45), Sargodha (24), Bahawalpur Division (55), Sahiwal (55), and Dera Ghazi Khan (16).

This initiative ensures that no poor prisoner in Punjab will be denied access to legal representation.
