PFA imposes hefty fine on hospital canteen over violations.

Lahore, : An enforcement team of the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) imposed a hefty fine during a raid on a famous hospital’s canteen in the area of Muslim Town over violation of the PFA Act.

PFA Director General Muhammad Asim Javaid said that the authority took action against the food business operator (FBO) due to an abundance of insects, an open drainage system, a stinky environment, usage of rusty vessels and worst condition of hygiene. Apart from that, workers of the unit did not have medical and training certificates.

He said that FBOs must ensure compliance with the PFA rules otherwise, lawbreakers would be dealt an iron hand. Food safety teams have been assigned a special task for weekly checking of canteens in hospitals, universities and colleges, he said.

He expressed serious concern over the poor cleanliness arrangements of the hospital canteen. He said that the provision of harmful or unhealthy food items in hospitals cannot be tolerated under any circumstances because the use of substandard food causes health problems for consumers. He said that FBOs that manufacture and sell substandard food are not entitled to any exemption.

The process of checking the canteens is continued to ensure the safe food supply in public and private hospitals. Our mission is to eliminate foodborne diseases by ensuring the supply of safe food, he added.
