QUETTA: The last phase of Local Government (LG) elections was completed with oath taking of members of the district councils and election of their chairman and vice chairman in 35 districts of Balochistan on Thursday.
Over 1200 elected members of the district councils including chairman of rural union councils and those elected on reserved seats used their right of franchise for election of the chairman and vice chairman of district councils.
The process of oath taking of the district council members and polling for election of their chairman and vice chairman was started at around 08:00 PM and remained continued till 04:00 PM without any break.
Earlier, the returning officers of concerned districts administered oath to the members of district councils.
While the process of oath taking and election got started as per schedule and that somehow at the given time, but it started hours late in some districts.
Later, the newly elected chairman and district chairman took oath of their respective offices.
Tough security measures were adopted on occasion of the oath taking and election of the chairman and vice chairman of district councils in all 35 districts.
Section 144 was also imposed to ensure peace in the districts with additional deployment of police, levies and other law enforces in the sensitive districts.
It may be mentioned here that control rooms were set up in Election commission of Pakistan secretariat Islamabad and Provincial Election Commissioner office Quetta.
The overall process of oath taking and election was monitored through the control rooms. Senior officers of ECP remained present to attend the complaints at the control rooms.
The process of LG election had been started in May last year. The LG elections are yet to be held in Quetta district.
