ISLAMABAD, AUGUST 28
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has cautioned that internet services across the country are expected to remain sluggish until early October due to the ongoing repair of a submarine cable, the primary cause of the slow internet speeds.
Internet users, particularly those relying on mobile data, have faced significant difficulties in recent weeks, including sending media and audio messages via WhatsApp or downloading them, as well as extremely slow browsing speeds on broadband connections.
The business community and internet service providers (ISPs) have blamed the government’s efforts to monitor internet traffic, including the use of firewalls, for the sluggish digital services, resulting in economic losses.
Minister for Information Technology Shazia Fatima has confirmed that the submarine cable repair is expected to be completed by October, which should restore normal internet speeds. However, the PTA has warned that the country may face economic losses of up to Rs 12 billion annually due to the slow internet speeds.
