As I reminisce about my days at Government College Lahore, fond memories flood my mind, transporting me back to the year 1989 when I first entered through the majestic main gate of the institution. It was a moment filled with excitement, nervousness, and a profound sense of pride as I embarked on a journey that would shape my future.
One of the most memorable experiences during my time at Government College was the exhilarating climb towards the iconic tower, a symbol of the institution’s rich history and academic excellence. With each step, I felt a sense of awe and reverence, knowing that I was following in the footsteps of countless scholars who had walked the same path before me.
Spending two and a half years in the History Department from 1989 to 1991 was truly a transformative experience. Under the guidance of esteemed educators such as Dr. Amjad Butt, Prof. Syed Masud Raza, Dr. Farhat Mehmud, Prof. Muhammad Sadiq, Prof. Ammanullah Virk and others, I delved deep into the annals of history, gaining a newfound appreciation for the past and its impact on the present.
One of the highlights of my time at Government College was the celebration of its 125th Anniversary. It was a momentous occasion marked by festivities, academic discussions, and a sense of camaraderie as Old Ravians from across the globe gathered to pay tribute to their alma mater.
Reflecting on the history of Government College Lahore fills me with pride. Established in 1864, it has played a pivotal role in shaping the intellectual and cultural landscape of Pakistan. Over the years, it has produced a plethora of renowned scholars, leaders, and visionaries who have left an indelible mark on society.
Today, I am heartened to learn that Government College Lahore continues to thrive under the leadership of its first female Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir. Her appointment symbolizes the institution’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity, paving the way for future generations of students to succeed.
Recently, I was honored to receive an invitation from my old buddy and dearest friend, Sajid Goraya, to attend the Annual Dinner of the GCU Old Ravian Union. It was a gathering of esteemed alumni, where Federal Minister of law and Justice Mr. Azam Nazeer Tarar and Speaker Punjab Assembly Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan were among the distinguished guests. Unfortunately, due to personal and official commitments in Islamabad, I was unable to attend, but my spirit was with them as they celebrated the bonds of friendship and the legacy of Government College Lahore.
As I look back on my journey as an Old Ravian, I am filled with gratitude for the memories, the friendships, and the invaluable lessons learned. Government College Lahore will always hold a special place in my heart, and I am proud to carry its legacy wherever life may take me.
