Islamabad, July 31, 2024 – A high-level meeting was held to discuss the restoration of the Kacchi Canal, with Federal Minister for Water Resources, Musadik malik, in the chair. Balochistan Chief Minister, Mir Sardar Faraz Bugti, participated via video link and presented the province’s stance on the issue.
The meeting discussed the completion of the first phase of the Kacchi Canal, which took 22 years, and the subsequent damage caused by floods in 2022. The Chief Minister emphasized the need for immediate restoration of water supply to the canal, which is crucial for the livelihood of thousands of families in the command area.
The meeting decided to implement the WAPDA-proposed plan to restore water supply to the Kacchi Canal on an emergency basis, followed by long-term measures to prevent future damage. The Federal Minister directed authorities to take immediate action to restore water supply to the canal and to work on flood protection measures.
The meeting also discussed the need for a comprehensive plan to address the issues faced by the local population due to the closure of the canal, including economic hardship and displacement. The Chief Minister stressed the importance of completing phases 2 and 3 of the Kacchi Canal project without delay to prevent further losses.
