Pakistan-ASEAN Relations Take Center Stage at ISSI Roundtable

Islamabad, August 7, 2024 – The Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) hosted a high-profile roundtable discussion titled “Pakistan and ASEAN: A Growing Partnership” today, marking the eve of ASEAN Day. The event brought together diplomatic heavyweights from both Pakistan and ASEAN member states to explore the evolving relationship between the two entities.

Ambassador Imran Ahmed Siddiqui, Additional Secretary (Asia Pacific) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The roundtable saw participation from Heads of Missions of ASEAN member states in Islamabad and Pakistan’s Heads of Missions in ASEAN capitals, alongside prominent civil servants, academicians, and media personnel.

In his opening remarks, ISSI Director General Ambassador Sohail Mahmood highlighted ASEAN’s global significance, noting its impressive $3.67 trillion GDP and pivotal role in regional stability. He emphasized Pakistan’s status as ASEAN’s oldest Sectoral Dialogue Partner and the expanding scope of collaboration, with bilateral trade reaching nearly $11 billion in 2022.

H.E. Col. (Retd) Pengiran Haji Kamal Bashah Bin Pengiran Haji Ahmad, Chairman of the ASEAN Committee in Islamabad (ACI) and High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam, underscored ASEAN’s commitment to stability and inclusivity. Other ASEAN diplomats, including ambassadors from Malaysia, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Vietnam, shared insights on bilateral relations and areas of mutual interest.

Pakistani Heads of Missions in ASEAN capitals provided valuable perspectives on the growing ties. Ambassador Ameer Khurram Rathore, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Indonesia and ASEAN, stressed the critical importance of ASEAN for Pakistan’s regional strategy.

The roundtable also addressed pressing global issues. Ambassador Maria Agnes M. Cervantes of the Philippines highlighted the shared challenges of climate change, while discussions touched upon counter-terrorism, combating Islamophobia, and cybersecurity as potential areas for enhanced cooperation.

In his keynote address, Chief Guest Ambassador Imran Ahmed Siddiqui commended ASEAN’s 57-year journey towards “One Vision, One Identity, One Community.” He outlined opportunities for Pakistan to deepen collaboration with ASEAN across various domains, including trade, security, and cultural exchanges.

The event concluded with remarks from Ambassador Khalid Mahmood, Chairman BoG, ISSI, who reflected on ASEAN’s evolution and its role in promoting regional connectivity and economic growth.

This roundtable marks a significant step in strengthening Pakistan-ASEAN relations, showcasing the commitment of both sides to foster a robust partnership in an increasingly interconnected world.
