QUETTA: In accordance with the directives of Secretary Irrigation, Hafiz Abdul Majid, Chief Engineer Quetta Zone, Engineer Bashiruddin Tareen, along with Superintendent Engineer Qurban Ali Jatoi and SDO Engineer Ajmal Khan, conducted a detailed inspection of the Orak River in Quetta. The visit aimed to assess the extensive damage caused by recent heavy rains in Quetta and its surrounding areas.
Chief Engineer Tareen highlighted the severe impact of the floods on homes and agricultural lands along the Urak River. He noted significant damage to infrastructure, including roads, water pipelines, and bridges in the Hana Orak area. Tareen also warned of a high risk of further erosion in future floods and stressed the urgency of preventive measures.
He commended the irrigation department’s staff for their efforts despite limited resources and emphasized the need for reinforcing waterways, dams, and embankments in response to increased rainfall intensity due to climate change. Tareen called for improved coordination among departments for systematic planning and suggested that the Government of Balochistan adopt strategic planning with development partners to strengthen irrigation structures.
Tareen further advocated for accelerated water storage efforts, including the construction of check dams to mitigate hill torrents and enhance groundwater recharge in the Quetta Valley. He underscored the importance of coordinated watershed and rangeland management to address the region’s water challenges sustainably.
