UNDP/UNAIDS Consultative Session steps up Law Enforcement to fight HIV Stigma:
Lahore, July 13th, 2023 – UNDP and UNAIDS hosted their fourth consultative session in Lahore, with the primary objective of finalizing the engagement strategy for law enforcement agencies to effectively respond to the growing challenge of HIV stigma and discrimination. The pressing need for action arises from the alarming increase in HIV cases, making it imperative for all stakeholders, particularly law enforcement, to unite in eradicating the stigma and discrimination associated with the disease.
The five hours session was attended by officials from police, ANF, BAHAM organization, Khawjasera society and other civil society and NGOs individuals.
During the session, Rao Sardar, IG Railways, emphasized the crucial importance of viewing HIV as a disease rather than stigmatizing individuals. He advocated for a shift in focus from hatred towards the ailment itself, promoting understanding and compassion among society.
Mr. Azher Hussain, the operation manager Punjab AIDS control Program provided detailed insights into the comprehensive measures being implemented to address HIV in the region. He explored the contours of the issue and highlighted the significant progress made in combating the spread of HIV.
Dr. Kaleem Imam skillfully moderated the session, providing a comprehensive overview of the prevailing situation. He emphasized the collective efforts required to eliminate HIV-related stigma and discrimination, fostering healthier and more compassionate communities nationwide.
Dr. Sidra from UNDP Punjab underscored the collective efforts of UNDP, UNAIDS, law enforcement agencies, and other key stakeholders in creating a society free from HIV stigma and discrimination. She stressed the importance of strengthening the engagement strategy and fostering greater awareness, understanding, and support to pave the way for a more inclusive and resilient society.
Dr. Summaya, also from UNDP, emphasized the urgent need for collaboration and a united front in the fight against HIV. She highlighted the significance of all sectors coming together to combat the spread of the disease, promote acceptance, and provide comprehensive support to individuals affected by HIV.
IG Punjab, Usman Anwar, expressed his sincere appreciation for the ongoing efforts in tackling HIV stigma and discrimination. He specifically commended the instrumental role played by the Tahafuz Markaz in assisting both the public and police force members in preventing communicable diseases.
Dr. Habib Gilani shared compelling cases illustrating the hardships faced by individuals who conceal their condition and avoid seeking treatment due to the stigma associated with HIV. He emphasized that the way forward lies in creating awareness and transforming societal attitudes.
Session concluded agreeing that by uniting against HIV stigma and discrimination, we can create a society that supports and embraces individuals affected by the disease. Through heightened awareness, compassionate understanding, and collaborative action, we can overcome this challenge and build a healthier, more inclusive future.
