SSUET organized a seminar on the Safe Bike Riding

KARACHI, May 30, 2023 – The closing session of the Safe Bike Riding Event was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering & Architecture of Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology in pursuit to create awareness among professionals, students and general public and impart relevant technical knowledge to extend their road safety knowledge modern techniques.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Vali Uddin officially inaugurated the bike-riding simulator, COTRETS (Centre of Transportation Research and Technological Solutions) which was dedicated to SSUET by Atlas Honda, and the final year students of Civil Engineering and Software Engineering are exploring it in related research activities.

Administrator Karachi, Dr. Saif ur Rehman was the Chief Guest of the 2-day inaugural session that was attended by Prof. Dr. Mir Shabbar Ali, Dean Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, SSUET, Corporate Manager Unilever, Muhammad Salik, Country Manager Atlas Honda, Iftikhar Ahmed and Dr. Omer Qureshi, Technical Experts on Road Safety and Artificial Intelligence and others.

Addressing the session, Administrator Karachi, Dr. Saif ur Rehman said that the highest number of fatalities was recorded in the age group of 18-40 years (54.5%). Causes of accidents include over-speeding by motorists and maneuverings by motorcyclists coupled with people’s unawareness of traffic rules emerged as the second major cause of fatal accidents. People should understand that the rules are for their own benefit and non-cooperation from their side will only put their own life in danger.

Vice Chancellor SSUET, Prof. Dr. Vali Uddin said that changes are now technology based. The safety of students is important because they are our future and the majority of them are caught in road accidents. We make policies, and there is no representation of youth in policymaking. Effective and proper implementation of policies reduce the chances of failure.

Recognizing the significance of road safety, Registrar SSUET, Syed Sarfraz Ali said that it is crucial to remember that your safety on the roads plays an integral role in shaping your future. Education and awareness campaigns are essential in promoting road safety. We must equip individuals, from a young age, with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate our roads safely. Remember the rule; it is better to arrive late than never to arrive.

Technical Expert on Road Safety, Dr. Umar Qureshi, said that science or research does not see who made a mistake, instead focuses on how to save from the adverse effects of the mistake.

Dean, FoCV&AD, Prof. Dr. Mir Shabbar Ali said that COTRETS is a trendsetter in having multidisciplinary research. When traffic accidents occur, the most vulnerable people are young people. Around 40% of fatal accidents belong to bike riders. Considering this seriousness Atlas Honda acquired a bike rider simulator.
