Karakoram International University and China-Pakistan Joint Research Center Join Hands to Establish Karakoram Observation and Research Station

Gilgit,Nov. 07 Karakoram International University (KIU) and the China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences (CPJRC) have agreed to establish the Karakoram Observation and Research Station (KORS) ¹. This landmark decision was finalized during a meeting between the two organizations, where they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlining the terms of the collaboration.
The primary objective of KORS will be to address geological challenges in the earthquake-prone Karakoram Range, focusing on disaster risk reduction and environmental monitoring ¹. This initiative is crucial, given the region’s unique geological features and the need for sustainable mountain development.
Disaster Risk Reduction_: Mitigating the impact of earthquakes and other natural disasters in the region
– _Environmental Monitoring_: Tracking changes in the environment and developing strategies for sustainable development
– _Geological Research_: Conducting research on the unique geological features of the Karakoram Range

The meeting was chaired by KIU’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Ataullah Shah, and attended by CPJRC’s Executive Director, Hong Hong Tiatuhua, along with other university officials ¹. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in promoting research and development in the region.

Karakoram International University is a public sector university located in Gilgit, established in 2002 with a charter from the Federal Government of Pakistan ². The university has a strong focus on research and development, with faculties including Humanities and Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Engineering, and Life Sciences ².
