NDF Pakistan Hosts Provincial Seminar on Climate Change and Its Adverse Impacts, Emphasizes Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Climate Responses
Karachi: The National Disability & Development Forum (NDF) Pakistan organized a provincial seminar titled “Climate Change and Its Adverse Impacts” in Karachi, bringing together key stakeholders, disabled persons organizations, and climate change experts to discuss the urgent challenges posed by climate change and the essential inclusion of persons with disabilities in climate action and disaster responses. The seminar was addressed by Abid Lashari, President of NDF Pakistan, Tariq Hussain Channar and Asadullah who highlighted the severe effects of climate change in Pakistan, stating, “Our country has faced devastating floods, earthquakes, heavy rains, and other climate-related disasters. These events have especially impacted the most vulnerable communities, including persons with disabilities. It is crucial that we address this issue collectively and prioritize inclusive policies that ensure no one is left behind during climate crises.
Mr. Lashari emphasized the support of the Korea SHE Foundation, whose seed grants have empowered NDF Pakistan to actively promote the inclusion of persons with disabilities during flood responses and other climate-related emergencies. “Thanks to the Korea SHE Foundation’s initiative, we have been able to bring this important issue to the forefront, creating an opportunity for DPOs and other stakeholders to collaborate on developing strategies for inclusive climate action in Sindh,” he added. During the seminar, participants engaged in discussions on the unique challenges faced by persons with disabilities amid climate change, including limited accessibility in emergency shelters, inadequate early warning systems, and insufficient support during evacuations. The event also highlighted the need for inclusive disaster preparedness and recovery plans that address these specific needs. The seminar concluded with a commitment to continued collaboration among all stakeholders to strengthen climate resilience for persons with disabilities in Pakistan. NDF Pakistan aims to use the outcomes from this seminar to guide future actions and policies that will mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change while promoting inclusivity and accessibility at every level of climate response.
