The Punjab Assembly has taken a significant step towards combating human trafficking and smuggling, particularly involving women and children, both domestically and internationally. A resolution presented by Members of Provincial Assembly Uzma Kardar, Asma Naz, Raheela Khadim Hussain, and Shazia Abid was unanimously approved by both government and opposition benches.
The resolution highlights the alarming rise in smuggling and trafficking cases in Punjab, where traffickers exploit women and children for purposes such as begging, prostitution, forced labor, organ trafficking, and drug trafficking ¹. This move aims to establish a special committee to tackle these issues.
Combat Trafficking in Persons (TIP)_ and smuggling of migrants
– _Protect women and children_ from exploitation
– _Enhance international cooperation_ to address cross-border smuggling
– _Strengthen laws and enforcement_ to prevent trafficking and smuggling
The Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act, 2018, already exists to promote national and international cooperation, protect victims, and provide related matters ¹. However, the resolution seeks to intensify efforts and establish a specialized committee to address the growing concern.
By taking this stance, the Punjab Assembly demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of its citizens, particularly vulnerable women and children.
