(Independent Report )
_ISLAMABAD, AUGUST 7, 2024_

The Pakistani government has taken a significant step towards regulating drug prices in the country. A committee formed to make recommendations for determining drug prices has proposed the establishment of an independent body to oversee the process.

The proposal was discussed in a meeting chaired by Minister of Law Azam Tarar, who emphasized the need for an independent and transparent approach to drug price regulation. The committee considered a proposal to form an independent body under the supervision of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) to determine drug prices.

The meeting also discussed the separation of regulation and price determination as two distinct domains. Minister Tarar stressed the importance of ensuring representation from all provinces in the independent body.

The proposal is aimed at addressing concerns over high drug prices in Pakistan and ensuring that essential medicines are available to citizens at affordable rates. The government is expected to take a final decision on the proposal in the coming weeks.
