ISLAMABAD- Secretary Mazhar Irshad, currently serving in the Governor’s Secretariat in Peshawar on deputation from the Federal Board of Revenue, has been accused of rampant corruption. Mazhar Irshad, a grade 19 officer from the Inland Revenue Service, stands accused of accepting substantial bribes from multiple universities across the province under the guise of his clerical demeanor and purported nobility. Sources within the Governor’s Secretariat have disclosed that Mazhar Irshad was appointed as the governor’s secretary at the behest of Governor Ghulam Ali’s son. Since assuming the role, Mazhar Irshad has allegedly engaged in widespread corruption, utilizing his position to extort bribes from both male and female university employees in the name of the governor. Furthermore, official resources, including vehicles from the governor’s secretariat, are purportedly being misappropriated for Mazhar Irshad’s illicit activities. The corruption scandal has also had repercussions for Benazir Women University Peshawar, where Mazhar Irshad allegedly facilitated the Vice Chancellor in obtaining foreign travel permissions illegally, bypassing the requirement for a No Objection Certificate. Despite being portrayed as polite and honest by Governor Ghulam Ali, Mazhar Irshad’s true record remains shrouded in mystery, with even the governor himself purportedly unaware of the extent of Mazhar Irshad’s alleged misdeeds. A Senior journalist and columnist has weighed in on Mazhar Irshad’s background, suggesting that he has a history of seeking deputation from lucrative positions to engage in illegal activities for financial gain. Mazhar Irshad has also been accused of orchestrating a media campaign against several officers, including the Chairman of the FBR. The scandal surrounding Mazhar Irshad has sent shockwaves through the corridors of power in Peshawar, raising serious questions about the integrity and accountability of officials entrusted with public office. As investigations into the matter continue, calls for swift and decisive action against those implicated in the scandal are growing louder.
