(Naeem Barrech)

Social media has become an integral part of our lives, especially for young people. It serves as a platform for connecting, sharing, and expressing ideas and views. In today’s digital age, we are witnessing an ever-evolving social media landscape, with the majority of individuals worldwide using it, particularly among the younger generation. The statistics reinforce this reality. Every day, social media continues to gain popularity, and its effects on youth are becoming increasingly apparent in various aspects of our lives. In this discussion, we will explore both the positive and negative impacts of social media on youth.
Social media can exert both positive and negative influences on mental health. On the positive side, it can offer a sense of belonging, support, and a platform for expressing innovative ideas. However, excessive use and comparing oneself to others can lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and depression. Therefore, it is crucial for young people to strike a balance between their online interactions and real-life connections.
Additionally, social media provides a wealth of information, facilitates interaction, and enhances social awareness. However, it can also be a double-edged sword for education, as excessive time spent on these platforms can lead to procrastination and decreased focus on studies. Furthermore, the rapid spread of misinformation and fake news underscores the importance of teaching young individuals how to critically evaluate information from various digital sources.
In Balochistan, access to technology and social media has arrived later compared to other provinces. This can pose a steep learning curve for young people, emphasizing the necessity for them to receive proper guidance and support in navigating these platforms safely and responsibly.
Social media can be misused in various ways, including cyberbullying, spreading rumors, and sharing inappropriate content. It is essential for youngsters to be aware of the potential risks and to promptly report any harmful behavior they encounter.
Way Forward
Limiting the amount of time users spend on social media is crucial to maintaining a balanced life. Social media should primarily serve as a communication tool to stay in touch with one’s social circle.
The most constructive use of social media involves spreading optimism by posting positive and uplifting content that can inspire and bring smiles to others. Social media also opens doors to more learning opportunities, with online classes and remote jobs becoming the new norm.
Consistently creating valuable content can help build a strong online presence and attract opportunities for earning. Social media can be harnessed effectively for digital marketing and advertisement purposes.
Active engagement with relevant communities and following industry influencers can facilitate continuous learning on social media platforms. Control over who can view your content and interact with you is crucial; therefore, using privacy settings to protect your online presence is advisable.
Social media has undoubtedly transformed the way young people interact and communicate. While it offers numerous benefits, it is essential to remain mindful of its potential negative impacts on mental health, education, and responsible technology use. By fostering a healthy relationship with social media and receiving proper guidance, young people can harness its potential for positive growth and development.
