IN PAKISTAN, MORE THAN 35 % PEOPLE SUFFER IODINE DEFICIENCY . AGHA FAKHAR HUSSAIN

Karachi –    On the eve of World Iodine Deficiency Day, Sindh Food Authority with the Technical Assistance of Nutrition International and Provincial Fortification Alliance,  have arranged “AWARENESS WALK” at PORT GRAND Karachi .

Director General Sindh Food Authority Agha Fakhar Hussain, Dr. Fatima from NI, Naveed Bhutto from Fortification Alliance , all the officers and officials of SFA , owners of renowned hotels/ restaurants and members of civil society participated in the walk.

Speaking on the occasion,  DG SFA Agha Fakhar Hussain said that in Pakistan, more than 35 percent people especially children and women were suffering from deficiency of iodine so there was a need to create awareness on the issue. He said that iodine should be should be used in food items in order to protect themselves from the deficiency of iodine.

The certificate distribution ceremony was also held on the occasion. All the Food handlers of port grand , those who participated in training organised by SFA , were given the certificates.

It was also announced by management of Port Grand that from   now all the restaurants at port grand would use only fortified salt , oil and wheat flour . By doing so  Port Grand has become the first fortified food street in the country.
