QUETTA: As many as 59 persons including a serving Deputy Superintendent of Police and a prominent religious leader were martyred and over 60 others injured-some of them seriously-in a suicide blast hit the gathering of Eid Miladun Nabi (SAW) in Mastung city on Friday.
According to the local police and administration, the death toll may increase in view of the serious condition of some injured of the blast.
The reports suggested that explosion occurred when the faithfuls were assembling at an open area close to a Masjid located at Mehrab road for participation in the procession of Eid Miladun Nabi (SAW).
The suicide bomber exploded himself just close to the processionists when the DSP Nawaz Gishkori and other personnel tried to stop from moving ahead.
As a result of the powerful explosion, over 30 died on the spot while over 100 injured, most of them seriously.
The police , levies and local administration rushed towards the spot and started shifting the dead and injured to the local hospitals of Mastung including District Headquarter hospital and Shaheed Nawab Ghous Bakhsh Raisani Hospital where an emergency was already declared.
However some seriously injured persons breathed their last either on the way to hospital or before they were provided proper medical treatment.
However, the death toll reached to 52 till ours going to the press.
Moreover, over 60 persons were injured. Of them, 51 were shifted to the Sandeman provincial headquarter hospital and admitted in the Trauma center.
The condition of some injured is stated to be precarious in the Trauma center.
Those martyred in the suicide blast were included DSP Nawaz Gishkori and the organizer of the procession and Khateeb of Madina Masjid , Mufti Saeed Ahmed Habibi.
Among injured were also three police constables.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police Balochistan, Abdul Khaliq Sheikh along with other high ups reached the spot of Mastung blast.
Speaking on the occasion, he confirmed that it was a suicide blast occurred in Mastung.
Earlier, the Medical Superintendent of Sandeman Hospital, Dr Muhammad Ishaq Panezai declared an emergency in the hospital and called all the doctors, nurses and paramedics in the hospital for emergency duty.
The caretaker Provincial Minister for Home, Captain (Retd) Mir Zubair Jamali and caretaker Minister for Health, Dr Amir Muhammad Khan Jogezai visited the Trauma center of the hospital the same evening.
They inquired about health of the injured persons.
They directed the concerned authorities to provide best medical treatment to all the injured.
They prayed for the early recovery of the injured persons.
