PM Appoints Ishaq Dar as Deputy Prime Minister

ISLAMABAD,  (Monitoring Desk): Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has been appointed as Deputy Prime Minister of Pakistan, according to the notification issued by the Cabinet Division here on Sunday.

After the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won the February 8 elections and formed a coalition government, Dar, a seasoned politician and chartered accountant, was appointed as the country’s foreign minister.

Dar, 73, is known for his close ties to PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif. His appointment signals a greater focus on economic diplomacy, aiming to secure deals with the International Monetary Fund and bolster financing from foreign sources.

Before Dar, the only other national politician to hold the position of deputy prime minister was Pervaiz Elahi from the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), back in 2012 during a previous political alliance.

Dar, who previously served as finance minister multiple times and held other key ministerial positions, now assumes the role of foreign minister, indicating a strategic shift towards leveraging economic strengths in diplomatic efforts.
